Occupational Therapy for NDIS Participants who are passionate about photography.
As an Occupational Therapist providing ongoing therapy to improve a participant’s daily living and increase their capacity, I usually try to find something that the participant enjoys and create a project around that interest as a way to provide therapy that the participant will engage in.
As I have skills and experience in photography I’m doing things a little backwards and specifically providing therapy to participants who are passionate about photography. I offer a 10 week 1:1 program where Occupational Therapy is provided through the meaningful occupation of photography. This is ideal for participants who are interested in photography and can be a great option if they have had difficulties engaging in other forms of therapy.
By utilising an activity they enjoy, I provide therapy to help the participant build their capacity around things such as:
- Memory,
- Sequencing,
- Scheduling, planning and organisation,
- Time and fatigue management,
- Problem solving,
- Communication, social skills and connecting with others,
- Computer skills,
- Mindfulness,
- Self-expression,
- Self-regulation,
- Building insight into strengths and challenges,
- Building life roles and meaningful use of their time.
As with all therapy, the intervention is tailored to the individual and in line with their NDIS goals.
Most participants who complete my 10 week therapy program report improved confidence and increase their community engagement throughout and following the program.
As part of the program, the participant and I explore mainstream opportunities that the participant may enjoy participating in such as exhibitions, camera clubs and volunteer work. Most participants enter exhibitions throughout the program where they have the opportunity to publicly display their artwork, with many winning awards and/or selling their work. Some participants have started their own businesses and offer paid photoshoots to friends, family and their community. Other participants have joined local camera clubs and attend these by themselves or with a support worker after the program. This program has helped several participants find purpose for their time with them continuing to pursue photography with their support workers after the program concludes.

I am at capacity for the rest of 2024, but contact me to join the waiting list for 2025.
I look forward to hearing from you soon,
Tammy.
